The Project, aims to document, archive and share through diverse channels with the Turkish and international public the disappearing history, social and cultural values, and daily living practices of Beşiktaş’ human texture which covers the lives of four generations starting from the beginning of the 20. century, encompassing the settlement areas of the city inhabited throughout Türkiye’s Ottoman and Republican history.
The objective is to raise the both Beşiktaş and Istanbul inhabitants’ sense of locality, neighbourhood fellowship, citizenship, and ownership of the city, and encourage their contribution to the city and neighbourhood history with their memories, experiences, letters, diaries, and photographs from their family albums. We believe this will enable us to sustain and pass on to the future generations the culture of belonging to Beşiktaş which is in itself a distinct cultural legacy.
