EDİRNEKAPI-AYVANSARAY PROJECT (2005)

The Edirnekapı-Ayvansaray Project, initiated in 2005, aimed to create a new cultural tourism route in Istanbul as an alternative to the heavily trafficked Sultanahmet and Bosphorus routes. It focused on the rich historical and cultural diversity of the area, highlighting Jewish, Christian, and Muslim heritage sites like Tekfur Palace, Anemas Dungeon, Emir Buhari Lodge, mosques and tombs.

The project included conservation, restoration, archaeological excavations, and the development of cultural activities and local artisan workshops to revitalize the region economically and socially. It also planned to establish a museum-city concept by displaying artifacts thematically on-site.

This route emphasizes Istanbul’s European dimension and cultural variety, aiming to educate locals and tourists alike while providing a sustainable tourism alternative where visitors can explore for 4-5 hours. The project also considered expanding towards Ayvansaray-Balat-Fener in the future.
